Caspers Wilderness Park
Caspers Wilderness Park
Hours: 7 am - Sunset daily
Trailer parking: Ample trailer parking, specifically reserved for horse trailers. Nice, paved road to get to the day-use lot, and very easy to get in and out. Day-use lot is all the way at the end of the road.
Horse friendly: Absolutely! They've thought of everything. There is a large scenic turnout pasture (but watch out for gopher holes), 2 corrals and a hitching post for each trailer parking spot, trails are well maintained with trees trimmed back for riders. All the trails in the park allow horses (some do not allow bikes). They also have an equestrian campground, but it was closed when we were there (call ahead to find out more).
What to expect: They charge $5 per vehicle to enter the park on weekends ($3 on weekdays). Dogs are NOT allowed! Very friendly, helpful personnel. Nice, CLEAN bathrooms. Ample picnic tables and grilling areas. Well marked, well maintained trail system with stunning mountain and canyon views. They have very limited water supply, so best to plan ahead and bring your own (for horses and people).
Terrain and difficulty level: Trails are labelled Easy, Moderate, Difficult. We stuck to the Easy and Moderate routes, and found them to be pretty accurate. There is somewhat of a climb and a descent, we went up to 900 ft. elevation, but once you are on the ridge trails it is mostly flat terrain. Some areas are slightly rocky. You will find lots of cacti, but easy to steer clear. Very little shade, so keep this in mind in the heat of the summer. It looked like there could be some water crossings in winter/spring, but they were dried up in August.
Overall thoughts: No idea why this place isn't more popular, we had a great experience! We encountered only a handful of hikers and mountain bikers on a Sunday morning in summertime. No other horse trailers, so we had the whole place to ourselves! Definitely check this place out!
